TURKISH REPUBLIC OF NORTH CYPRUS (TRNC) With its establishment on November 15, 1983, 39 years ago, the right of the Turkish Cypriot people to self-determination was declared to the world.
The TRNC, which was established 39 years ago, became an important turning point in which the Turkish Cypriot people declared their political life on the Island to the world with the concept of the state. The "Republic of Cyprus" was established in Cyprus in 1960 in accordance with international agreements based on partnership between the two peoples of the island, the Turks and the Greeks. Turkish Cypriots were removed from the administration of the country by pressure and violence as a result of the attacks carried out by Greek armed groups since 1963. The attacks and embargoes carried out by the Greeks against the Turks continued to increase between 1963-1974. The military coup administration, which seized power in 1967 in Greece, attacked the villages of Boğaziçi and Geçitkale in Cyprus. Upon Türkiye's warning that it would use its right of intervention arising from the agreements, Greece had to withdraw its forces from the island under the auspices of the United Nations (UN).
Upon these developments, the Turkish Cypriots established the "Cyprus Provisional Turkish Administration" on 29 December 1967, which means that their own administration would be provided by them "until the 1960 Constitution was fully implemented". The temporary administration was transformed into the "Turkish Cypriot Administration" after a while. This form of government lasted until 1974, when the "Autonomous Turkish Administration" was announced. Nikos Sampson, one of the leaders of EOKA-B, which was established to connect Cyprus with Greece, overthrew the President of Cyprus Makarios on July 15, 1974, with the coup he carried out with the support of the junta in power in Greece. When the news of the coup in the island reached Ankara, the National Security Council convened.
CYPRUS PEACE OPERATION
The Prime Minister of the Republic of Türkiye at the time, Bülent Ecevit, instructed the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) to prepare for the possibility of an intervention in Cyprus after the meeting. Türkiye offered to intervene in the Island to England, one of the guarantor states, for a joint intervention in the Island, but England did not accept the proposal. With the instructions of Prime Minister Ecevit and Deputy Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan, Türkiye started the Cyprus Peace Operation on 20 July 1974, taking into account the security of the Turkish Cypriots. Thus, the annexation of Cyprus to Greece was prevented and the existence of the Turkish Cypriot people was secured. After the successful conclusion of the operation, the Turkish Federated State of Cyprus was established on February 13, 1975. In accordance with the population exchange agreement reached between the Turkish and Greek Cypriot sides in Vienna a year later between the parties, two sections were formed on the Island as the Greeks moved to the south and the Turks to the north.
TRNC ANNOUNCED 39 YEARS AGO
With the decision taken by the Turkish Cypriot Federated Assembly, November 15, 1983 was an important turning point in the political life of the Turkish Cypriot people and a day when they announced their struggles to the world with the concept of the state. The Assembly unanimously approved the establishment of the TRNC and its declaration of independence in the extraordinary session it held on the same day. With the establishment of the TRNC, the right of the Turkish Cypriot people to self-determination was proclaimed. Rauf Denktaş, the founding President of the TRNC and the President of the Turkish Federated State of Cyprus at the time, in his speech addressing the people and students gathered in front of the Federal Assembly after the completion of the Assembly reunion in which the republic was proclaimed, stated that the struggle did not end and said, "How happy are the Turkish children of the TRNC".
5 DIFFERENT PRESIDENTS, 37 DIFFERENT GOVERNMENTS
Since 1983, when the TRNC was declared, 37 different governments have come to power in the country. In the Assembly of the Republic, which consists of 50 seats, the support of 26 deputies is required for the formation of the government. Since the establishment of the TRNC, Rauf Denktaş, Mehmet Ali Talat, Derviş Eroğlu, Mustafa Akıncı and later Ersin Tatar have been elected by the people for the presidency.
THE CYPRUS NEGOTIATIONS CONTINUING FOR 54 YEARS CANNOT RESULT
Negotiations aimed at finding a solution to the Cyprus problem began with the meetings held in Beirut in June 1968 between the founding President of the TRNC, Rauf Denktaş, and the Greek leader of the time, Glafkos Klerides. Each time, the Greek Cypriot side rejected the steps towards a solution, including the UN proposals, for various reasons, or put forward unacceptable conditions. Kofi Annan, the UN Secretary General of the time, put forward the document "Basis for a Comprehensive Solution to the Cyprus Problem", also known as the "Annan Plan", in 2002.
SUPPORT OF THE REPUBLIC OF TÜRKİYE
Türkiye has been the only state that recognizes and supports the TRNC, which has been under embargo and isolation since the day it was founded. Türkiye, which forced all diplomatic channels on the way to the establishment of the TRNC, on the other hand, showed its presence in the field with the Cyprus Peace Operation in 1974 to secure the existence of the Turkish Cypriots when diplomacy remained unanswered.
Türkiye's guarantorship has been one of the most important elements that positively reflected on the founding process of the TRNC.
